Coffeemania

Can someone explain to me Californians' fascination with where their coffee beans and tea leaves come from? In New York this isn't given much attention from what I can tell, but it's a very big thing on the West coast. Here they take their coffee organically grown, fairly traded and (I think) 100% recyclable. I do wondwe, what sort of unfair trading goes into the coffee that we drink back East.
